A bed bug infestation rarely stays where it started. A single occupied bed, suitcase or second-hand item can become the source of a wider problem as insects move towards people, warmth and reliable access to blood meals. Knowing how to spot bed bug migration routes helps you identify the true extent of activity before it reaches another bedroom, neighbouring flat or communal area.
Bed bugs do not migrate in neat lines, and they do not need to be visible during the day to be spreading. They move through cracks, furnishings, service voids and personal belongings, often using the same sheltered paths repeatedly. The objective is not to guess where they may have gone. It is to inspect methodically, follow the evidence and treat the routes as well as the obvious harbourages.
What a bed bug migration route looks like
A migration route is the protected pathway bed bugs use to travel from a harbourage to a feeding area, or from one room to another when their original location is disturbed, overcrowded or no longer gives them reliable access to a host.
In a bedroom, the route may be no more than a few centimetres from a bed frame joint to the edge of a mattress. In a block of flats, hotel or house in multiple occupation, it may extend through pipe penetrations, electrical trunking, skirting gaps or shared wall voids. Bed bugs are flat, small and highly effective at exploiting spaces that appear closed to the eye.
The clearest routes are usually close to where people rest for long periods. Start with beds, sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating. Then work outwards, checking the nearest cracks, furniture, wall edges and belongings before assuming activity is limited to one item.
Signs that bed bugs are moving between areas
A live bed bug is definitive evidence, but it is not the only evidence. Most infestations are identified through the marks bed bugs leave behind. Their movement can often be traced by a gradual reduction in signs near one harbourage and an increase in signs along nearby edges, furniture or rooms.
Look for the following combined indicators:
Black or dark brown spotting, particularly along mattress seams, bed frame joints, skirting boards, curtain headings and drawer runners. These are commonly faecal marks and can appear where bed bugs pause or harbour.
Pale, shed skins around cracks, behind headboards, inside divan bases and beneath loose wallpaper or carpet edges. Nymphs shed their skins as they develop.
Tiny pearly-white eggs fixed into protected seams and crevices. Eggs are easily missed without close inspection.
Small blood smears on sheets or pillowcases, which can indicate feeding activity but do not identify the route on their own.
A repeated pattern of bites after sleeping in another room, on a sofa or at a different property area. Bites vary greatly between individuals, so they should support physical evidence rather than replace it.
The pattern matters. A few marks on a headboard may indicate a local harbourage. The same marks on a bedside cabinet, skirting line, picture frame and the adjoining room suggest movement beyond the bed itself.
Follow edges, not open floor space
Bed bugs prefer sheltered travel. They commonly follow edges where two surfaces meet: skirting boards, carpet grippers, bed frame rails, wall corners, door frames, cable runs and the underside of furniture. They are less likely to cross open, exposed areas unless there is no alternative.
Inspect these linear features carefully with a bright torch. Pay particular attention to places where an edge continues from one room into another, such as under a doorway threshold or along continuous skirting. Dark spotting clustered around a gap can indicate that insects are using it as both a route and a resting point.
Do not overlook clutter stored beside the bed. Books, boxes, clothes, bedside items and charging leads can create a sheltered bridge from the sleeping area to wardrobes, drawers and adjacent walls.
Check the bed's perimeter first
A bed is the primary feeding zone in many domestic infestations. Begin at the mattress piping, labels, buttons and handles, then inspect the bed base, legs, castors, slats, screw holes and headboard fixings. If the bed touches a wall, curtain, bedside table or under-bed storage, bed bugs may have an uninterrupted route away from the frame.
A common warning sign is activity on the wall-side of a headboard or behind a bedside cabinet, even when the visible mattress appears clear. This can mean the main harbourage is not in the mattress at all. It may be inside the frame, behind the wall fixture or in a void close to the bed.
Moving the bed away from the wall may reduce one obvious crossing point, but it will not eliminate an established infestation. Bed bugs can climb walls, use furniture legs and enter via surrounding gaps. Isolation measures are useful for assessment, not a substitute for complete eradication.
How routes spread into other rooms
Bed bugs spread for practical reasons. They may follow a person who begins sleeping in another room, move when a host is absent, or disperse after an unsuccessful spray treatment disturbs their harbourage. They can also be carried unknowingly in laundry, luggage, cushions, electrical items and furniture.
In larger homes and commercial premises, movement often follows building features. Shared pipes, heating routes, conduit, dropped ceilings and wall cavities can connect bedrooms, offices, hotel rooms and neighbouring units. In these situations, an inspection limited to the room where bites were first reported can miss the actual route of spread.
For landlords and hospitality operators, reports from adjacent rooms should be treated seriously even if the rooms do not share a door. A room above, below or beside the reported location may be connected through fabric and services. The absence of visible insects on a quick visual check is not evidence that the route is clear.
Migration after DIY or spray treatment
Partial treatment is one of the main reasons bed bug routes become harder to identify. Repellent effects, missed harbourages or insecticide resistance can push surviving insects deeper into voids or towards untreated rooms. This may create the impression that the infestation has disappeared, only for bites to continue elsewhere days or weeks later.
Avoid moving bedding, furniture or bags into another room until the extent of the infestation is understood. Bag items securely before laundering or transporting them. Do not place a suspected mattress, sofa or bedside furniture in a communal corridor, skip area or another property, as this can spread the problem further.
Bed bugs are not a cleanliness issue. They are expert hitchhikers. Fast containment and disciplined handling of belongings are far more useful than indiscriminate cleaning or throwing items away.
Inspect high-risk migration zones
The highest-risk zones are the points where rooms, furniture and services connect. In a flat, inspect around radiator pipes, sockets, light fittings, cable entry points and gaps beneath fitted cupboards. In a house, look behind stair skirting, around loft hatches, beneath loose flooring and at pipework passing between floors.
Upholstered furniture deserves the same level of attention as beds. Sofas are a frequent secondary feeding area, particularly when occupants avoid a bedroom after noticing bites. Check seams, zips, staple lines, feet, the fabric dust cover underneath and the gap between cushions and the frame.
Hotels, hostels and managed properties should also inspect luggage storage, housekeeping trolleys, laundry holding areas and furniture moved between rooms. A migration route is not always structural. It may be operational, created when infested linen, luggage or furnishings are transported without containment.
