A bed bug can survive a quick blast of warmth that feels unbearable to touch. What temperature kills bed bugs? The practical answer is sustained heat of at least 45°C at the insect itself, but effective eradication requires more than reaching a number on a thermostat. Eggs are harder to kill, furniture creates insulated areas, and bed bugs retreat into gaps that can remain cooler than the rest of the room.

For a reliable whole-room result, professional heat treatment normally raises and holds the treated environment at approximately 50°C to 60°C. The aim is not simply to make the air hot. It is to ensure lethal temperatures reach mattresses, bed frames, skirting boards, soft furnishings, wardrobes and the hidden migration routes bed bugs use.

What temperature kills bed bugs and their eggs?

Bed bugs at all life stages are vulnerable to heat, but the time needed depends on the temperature achieved. Adult bed bugs and nymphs begin to die when their body temperature is held at around 45°C. Bed bug eggs generally need more certainty because they are more heat tolerant and are often concealed deep within fabric seams, cracks and clutter.

At 50°C or above, sustained exposure is lethal to bed bugs and eggs. This is why professional treatments work within a controlled 50°C to 60°C range rather than relying on a warm room, a domestic heater or a hot wash alone. Higher temperatures can kill more quickly, but successful treatment is about controlled penetration, not indiscriminate heat.

A room thermometer reading 50°C does not prove every bed bug has received a lethal dose. The temperature inside a thick mattress, behind a headboard, beneath a pile of clothes or within a void may be significantly lower. Those cold spots are where incomplete treatments fail.

Heat, time and location work together

Temperature is only one part of the equation. The hotter the exposure, the shorter the lethal time can be. Conversely, heat near the lower end of the effective range must be maintained for longer. In a real infestation, the operator must account for the slowest-heating location, not the hottest point in the room.

That is particularly relevant in larger homes, converted flats, hotel bedrooms and properties with dense furniture. A metal bed frame may heat quickly while a divan base, upholstered chair or packed wardrobe takes longer to reach the required core temperature. Treating the room until the visible surfaces feel hot is not a method. It is guesswork.

Why a hot wash or steam clean is not always enough

Laundry is a useful part of bed bug control. Washing washable items at 60°C and drying them on a high heat setting can kill bed bugs and eggs on those items, provided the whole load reaches the required temperature. Bag items before moving them through the property so insects are not transferred elsewhere.

Steam can also be highly effective when applied correctly. Steam delivered at the point of contact is hot enough to kill bed bugs rapidly, making it useful for mattress seams, bed joints and selected upholstery. The limitation is coverage. Moving too quickly, missing a crack, or failing to reach behind fittings can leave survivors and eggs in place.

Domestic space heaters, hairdryers, radiators and turning up the central heating are not reliable bed bug treatments. They may encourage bed bugs to move away from the heat before lethal exposure is achieved. They can also create fire risks, damage belongings and raise energy costs without resolving the infestation.

Do not move infested furniture into another room, a communal corridor or a vehicle without advice. Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. Shifting a mattress through a building can spread the infestation well beyond the original bedroom.

A single, planned treatment can be preferable to repeated chemical visits, room closures and uncertainty over whether resistant bed bugs have survived. The exact treatment plan depends on the building, infestation extent and whether adjacent rooms show signs of activity.

Bed bugs reproduce quickly and often spread from beds into living areas, luggage storage, staff rooms or neighbouring units before the issue is obvious. Avoid over-the-counter foggers.
